Transformational Leadership and Quality of Care

Theories of leadership, or theories on how influence toward a goal is asserted within organized structures, evaluate the qualities of effective and ineffective leaders and pose different conceptual models of how that influence is achieved . One such theory proven effective over time is transformational leadership, or leadership which is focused on positive change . Years of research have shown varying outcomes of those models, or leadership styles, in different contexts and affecting different factors related to quality, with transformational leadership consistently scoring higher in academic research study models.
Leadership has proven in studies to be a key factor in quality of service or care, with styles such as transformational leadership scoring higher in positively affecting quality than other styles, and significantly higher than passive-avoidance or laissez-faire styles, in which leadership is mostly avoided or simply lax . How transformational leadership impacts quality has been the subject of much scholarship and debate, with more effective styles consistently affecting positive change.
A number of factors have been considered in studies of these styles. Employee satisfaction, which has proven to affect positively outcomes for professionals and for patients, is improved in environments where a transformational leadership style is reported , Social capital development, which has been shown to directly affect an organization's capacity for innovation, is also improved under a transformational leadership models. Even in more challenging environments, such as the nursing home field of nursing, the use of positive and effective leadership styles has proven to improve the quality of care for patients and the working environment for professionals, with transformational leadership proving most effective, followed by authentic, and servant leadership styles in affecting outcomes significantly more positively than styles determined to be less effective. As transformational leadership as a theory and in practice continue to develop, the quality of care and outcomes for those affected by this leadership model can only improve.
